Meertens C.S.U., Het blokboek Canticum Canticorum als godsdienstig kunstwerk en A.J.J. Delen, Het blokboek Canticum Canticorum als graphisch kunstwerk. Eén van de 300 exemplaren op handgeschept Hollandsch papier van Van Gelder.

Venice, Vincentius Benalius, March 22, 1493. 30 x 21 cm. Early 19th century vellum with old marks of the University of Leiden. 139 leaves (first blank missing). Capital spaces with guide letters. Roman type with some sprinklings of Greek. At the beginning a handwritten register of words for this Lactantius. At the end part of a written register extracted from Cassius Dio. On the first text page a stamp of Leiden University signifies that the book was sold, signed by W.N. du Rieu, Leyden Librarian 1880-1897. Marginal notes in old hands (mainly in one hand, the same as the author of the registers). Some old page numbers partly cut off, in the beginning some stains. Austerely elegant incunable, discarded in the 19th century from Leiden University, with alphabetical registers and learned manuscript notes probably from the 16th century. 135 complete copies in ISTC. Goff L-11.

Blad uit Lectura super secundo Decretalium, deel 3. (Maculatuur).
Keulen, Johann Koelhoff, 1477. 32 x 20 cm. Eén incomplete pagina, die kennelijk gebruikt is als vulling van een boekband. Aan beide kanten een kolom tekst plus in de lengte een halve. Niet gerubriceerd en zonder notities. Zonder paginacijfers (die werden pas later uitgevonden), maar twee bladen hebben een katernaanduiding: q 3 en q 4. Enkele wormgaatjes en vlekjes. We hebben een tiental bladen in gelijke uitvoering, die waarschijnlijk vlak bij elkaar in het boek hebben gezeten. Sommige hebben een zichtbaar watermerk: een gekroonde kelk met daarin drie fleur-de-lis-symbolen tegen elkaar aan, en een gestileerde gotische letter 't' eronder; of een letter waar een kruis bovenuit steekt, die onderaan in een klaverblad uitloopt. Er zijn een paar kopjes bij, met gidslettertjes op de plaats waar kapitalen getekend moesten worden: Sepe stingit, Sollicit, Constitutis en Constitutus. De tekst betreft commentaar op decretalen, vaak van paus Innocentius III: kerkelijke wetten, die echter ook vaak het dagelijks leven regelden. De tekst is in het Latijn en zit vol afkortingen, die echter met wat oefening prima te overwinnen zijn: 'Inno' = Innocentius bijvoorbeeld. Het ISTC-nummer van deze incunabel is ip00059000. (Het blad is te groot voor de scanner).

Beautifully illustrated giant book about the preparation of an incunabula edition, known in the Low Countries as the World Chronicle of Hartmann Schedel. Contracts for the illustrations, calculations of profits and unsold copies have been preserved, and in 1972 previously unknown designs for the layout and woodcuts were discovered. These were extensively documented, depicted in large format and interpreted for this beautiful publication. From the Huib Van Krimpen collection.
